11 Twitter Tips for Online Marketing Businesses

1. As much as possible, include links with your tweets. Links to interesting outside resources are encouraged. Use www.bit.ly, a URL-shortening tool and a click-tracking tool as well.

2. When you first start building your Twitter following, on average only one out of every five tweets should be to your product, service or any events related to your company. Examples: “We will be featured on Good Morning America tomorrow 7:30am EST!” and “Our 15 horsepower mercury engines will be on sale Monday from 8am to 5pm only!”

3. On average, one out of every five tweets CAN be semi-personal and/or opinion – “Our staff is going to turn into Krispy Kreme donuts if we continue eating them at this pace!”

4. On average, the other three out of every five tweets should be industry-related news/happenings/related current events. These offer the most value to your new (and existing sometimes) followers. (Hint: Find these valuable pieces by just doing Google news searches for key terms you are focusing on.)

5. This one is very important. Be sure to use your keywords as much as possible (without it being overly apparent) in your tweets! Google and the other search engines are working hard (and already doing it in a lot of cases) on returning twitter accounts in SERPs. Here is an articledetailing this phenomena.

6. This one is also important. Look at those who are currently re-tweeting (RT @username) your messages and make sure you private message them occasionally “@username – your message here”. Take care of those who are willingly and exponentially expanding your voice and twitter presence because they are finding value in what you tweet.

7. You probably already know this, but quality over quantity when it comes to tweeting. If you don’t have anything “appealing” to tweet, don’t tweet at all.

8. Know when to tweet. A couple of studies have shown the most effective time to tweet is from noon to 2:00pm. Of course you can (and should) at other times, but this time slot appears to give you the highest “read percentage” and “re-tweet percentage” among your followers…so don’t miss it.

9. Be consistent. Tweet consistently, using those keywords often. Like all else, nothing replaces dedication.

10. If you are utilizing an auto-follow program (we recommend Twollow), slowly you should try to UN-Follow some people…without dramatically affecting your following. Test this slowly so as not to upset things too much in the beginning. The reason for this is that you will look like more of an “authority” Twitter user if you have vastly more people following you than those that you follow. Example: CNN Breaking News (http://twitter.com/cnnbrk) is following only 18 people, but has 2 million+ followers. Granted that is an exaggerative example, but it proves the point.

11. Once you have built up a loyal, “actively listening” following, you can push your product-related/events-related tweets up to 35% of your tweets at peak times (holidays, special events, etc..).
