2. When you first start building your Twitter following, on average only one out of every five tweets should be to your product, service or any events related to your company. Examples: “We will be featured on Good Morning America tomorrow 7:30am EST!” and “Our 15 horsepower mercury engines will be on sale Monday from 8am to 5pm only!”

3. On average, one out of every five tweets CAN be semi-personal and/or opinion – “Our staff is going to turn into Krispy Kreme donuts if we continue eating them at this pace!”

Test this slowly so as not to upset things too much in the beginning. The reason for this is that you will look like more of an “authority” Twitter user if you have vastly more people following you than those that you follow. Example: CNN Breaking News (http://twitter.com/cnnbrk) is following only 18 people, but has 2 million+ followers. Granted that is an exaggerative example, but it proves the point.

11. Once you have built up a loyal, “actively listening” following, you can push your product-related/events-related tweets up to 35% of your tweets at peak times (holidays, special events, etc..).

So, the second option is to use a link shortener to shrink the link down to fewer characters. You can use a free link shortener like TinyURL, SnipURL, or Bit.ly to shrink your URL. Go to the page you want to share, copy the link from the URL bar, go to the link shortener website and paste in the link then click to shorten. You’ll get a new link that’s much shorter and you can copy and paste that into your tweet. This will give you more room to share your thoughts. It can get a little bit time consuming though to have to shorten your links.

Another option is to use a tool like Hootsuite for tweeting. It offers a link shortener conveniently below the tweet box so it’s easy to shorten links and include them in your tweets without opening another website.

On many websites you can share a link easily by clicking on a “Tweet MeMe” button. This is the green button that shows how many times a page has been tweeted and has a “retweet” link below it. The new Twitter version is blue and popping up on many websites. Both of these tweeting links will automatically shorten the URL for you.

Or there may be sharing options at the bottom of the page. Just look for the Twitter logo, a tweetie bird or a tweet this link. These will usually shorten the link for you and make it easy to tweet.

Guys, getting a huge following on twitter is really simple, no need to read lengthy ebooks or (GASP) spend any of your hard earned cash. Save your time and money!

Once you break through the 2K followers mark, you can only follow 10% more tweeple than are following you. So a different method is needed to increase your follower count quickly.

Here’s how I get upwards of 400 followers a day (and niched too!):

Step 1: Every morning 7am and evening 11:30pm I go to my favorite internet marketer’s profile, and follow all the tweeple in the first few pages.

Step 2: There is no step 2

It really is that simple. Of course I’m a bit more selective than that, I only follow these kinds of people:

* People that have an avatar

* People that have a pretty balanced number of followed-followers

* People that have something related to SEO, internet marketing, niche marketing, or anything else relevant in their blurb

* People that have tweeted in the last 12 hours

My follow-back ratio is around 80-90%. Here’s why this works: most of these people *are* interested in my tweets since I’m in their niche, and most of these people are avid followers, and most of these are either online or have been recently, so the chance they’re going to be online again soon is good.

Each page of followers takes me around 3-5 minutes depending on how congested twitter is, so I can follow around 400 new people in 1hr. Once I get above 10K followers I’ll be able to follow 1K at a time, so I’ll probably outsource this activity.

I’ve also decided that I’m going to clean up my non-followers each week. Twitter Karma http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/ will show you your non-followers ordered by most recent tweets first. I unfollow everyone that has tweeted in the last day, because they were online and didn’t bother to follow me, so they aren’t likely to change their mind later. Twitter Karma also orders your followers by most recent tweets first. I’ll unfollow anyone who hasn’t tweeted for a month or more, reasoning that they’re dead profiles and shouldn’t take up space in my following list.

It sounds like a brutal system, and yes, it is!

I wouldn’t post news all the time though, but videos or pictures associated with related news items would provide more content than straight up news stories from CNN. – Bookmarked sites. I have a handful of sites I visit everyday. I pick out the best articles of the day and tweet them. But I only tweet them once. Also tweeting just the articles or blog posts is a lot better than tweeting the entire site. This way your followers don’t have to pick through what’s interesting. You’re directly showing them. – Find the hot hashtags or trends for the day right on the Twitter page. Tweet about that and join in the conversation! – Questions. Why don’t you ask your followers some questions and generate quick conversations? You don’t want to “chat” per say, but you can quiz the hive mind of your followers. If you do want to chat with someone, take it to DMs or get another Twitter account strictly for that. You may also find other people joining in the conversation and you’ll never know.. maybe you’ll develop your own hashtag!- Everyday life. Don’t be afraid to tweet your everyday life, but don’t make a habit out of it. If you do want to discuss what you’ve done for the day… at least include a little picture to make it more interesting. Twitter is a fantastic application to use if you plan on building relationships with potential customers and clients. But, there are many tools out there that make using twitter a lot easier. So many tools in fact, that it can get very confusing. So, today I want to talk about the best twitter tool in my experience.

That tools called TweetDeck. TweetDeck allows you to easily manage your account. Even if you have thousands upon thousands of followers. I use TweetDeck religiously every single day.

At the time of this article being written I have over 7000 followers and I’m following over 7000 people. So, as you can imagine it is very difficult to keep up with all of those people. But, TweetDeck allows me to categorize and systemized the way that I use twitter. It allows me to keep up with and follow many people at one time.

So, to me I could not live without this tool. In order to truly build the relationships I’m building I need this tool to accomplish that. It allows me to section off certain areas so I can focus on them. So, if I want to follow marketing people I can make a marketing list. Then, I put all of those marketing people into that list.

Next, if I want to follow and talk to all my friends I make a list for my friends. Then, I can follow them and listen to all my friends.

Next, I use another column for people I want to learn from. So, whenever someone makes a tweet that I want to learn from I can catch that as well.
